TRHS SAFE Kick-Off

Thunder Ridge High School students will begin participating in their 3rd year of the SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) program on September 7. SAFE is a teen run, peer-to-peer program focusing on increasing teen seat belt use through education, positive rewards and enforcement. It’s designed to bring awareness of the importance of wearing a seatbelt so we can reduce the number of motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities within the community. Focus on the dangers of teen driving, impaired driving, and distracted driving (texting, etc.) has also become an integral part of the program at TRHS.

The TRHS SAFE committee, a part of the National Honor Society, is excited to present the “In One Instant” program at 11:30 am onSeptember 7, in the HS gymnasium. The public is invited to attend this 40-minute presentation designed to impact teens and their decision making in ways that can prevent tragic driving collisions. Parent attendance is encouraged and we hope you continue discussion of this important topic with your teen.

SAFE has been instrumental in increasing the Kansas teen seatbelt rate from 61 percent in 2009 to 86.7% in 2016 (2017 information has not been released yet). At TRHS, seat belt use increased from 74% to 89% in one school year. WAY TO GO STUDENTS!

KDOT, AAA Traffic Safety Fund, State Farm, Kansas Regional Trauma Councils, KDHE, and Kansas Highway Patrol donate money to the state-wide funding of the SAFE Program. However, to sustain and fully implement SAFE, local funding is also necessary, so donor letters will be sent to local businesses. If you would like to learn more about SAFE, or would like to donate to the program, you may access information athttps://www.ktsro.org/safe, or contact Denise Miller at Thunder Ridge High School. You may also visit with one of the members of the SAFE Committee: Morgan Westbrook, Kennedy Rietzke, Elizabeth Hardacre, and Destiny Shook.

Steering Committee Support

The Thunder Ridge Steering Committee hosted its annual BACK TO SCHOOL BASH on Sunday, August 27 in Kensington. Coaches and student athletes of TRH helped serve the delicious meal while meeting and greeting the public. Around 240 people were served and the event was a huge success. The show of community support was greatly appreciated.
