Shop Local, Keep our Store OPEN
For those of you who don’t know, KCS reached a 20 year milestone this year. The Kensington City Council first designated the site for a new grocery store in April of 2004. A Community Grocery Store Committee included: Jeff Nech, John Struckhoff, Warren Barnell, Barbara Grauerholz, Rob Bogart, Rob Reitz, and Cindy Rahjes. This committee led meetings, presented options and information, and also raised funds for the new store project. There was a lot of hard work and dedication involved from these individuals and numerous others who showed up to help. February 25, 2005 was the First delivery truck and Opening Day was April 30, 2005. It was truly a COMMUNITY effort to make this grocery store a reality.
KCS is not an affiliated store, we don't have big company backing. We don’t have any cooperative support, we have YOU. When you don’t shop here, we lose money. Some people complain there are holes in our shelves, they can’t find the items they need, we don’t offer enough variety. Sorry to say, but we can’t always afford to fill the gaps, to order in new things, when we don’t have the income. Many times we have special ordered items upon request for one item to sell and the rest of the case sits, and sits, and sits until we are forced to toss it once it’s gone out of date. We lose money when we can’t sell the outdated bread or when we pour the souring milk down the drain. But then people complain when they come in and we have sold out of bread and milk. Sales were down so we closed on Sundays and people were complaining about this too. We need a minimum of $300 in sales on a Sunday to make it worth being open. And we need a minimum of $1,600 on a regular day, Monday through Saturday, just to break even. If our community doesn’t shop here, we can’t afford to restock the shelves effectively.
One way you can support KCS is shopping the weekly sales. Make a list off the sales ad and make an effort to spend at least 1/3 of your grocery budget here in town. Another way you can help is with donations, which we truly appreciate! But we also need to see people coming in the doors and shopping. Every little bit helps!
Thank you for 20 years and let’s keep going strong! Please shop local and help keep our doors open. This town needs this store.
Hours are: Monday-Saturday from 9am-7pm, now open on Sundays from 11am to 3pm.
