Grandparents Day at TRES

On Friday, September 7, the Thunder Ridge Elementary School held their annual Grandparents/Grand-friends Day. Each year, the elementary hosts a lunch for grandparents or special friends to come visit the classrooms, eat lunch with their grandchildren, and then go to lunch recess with the kids. Some kids are fortunate enough to have grandparents who live close enough to come for the day. Other students had special family friends or even a parent join them for lunch. All together, we had 51 special visitors for the event. The guests arrive at 10:30, and each grade does something special prior to lunch. Some prepare a program of poems and songs; some do a craft together; while others share about what they're currently learning in school. The kids LOVE showing off their rooms and having a special someone eat lunch with them! The staff at Thunder Ridge look forward to having guests in the building as well to show the community how blessed we are to have such a close knit group of students and adults. Everyone looks forward to it each new school year!

Church Youth Raising Funds for Veteran's Community Project

The youth at St. John Lutheran Church held a kick-off lunch for their church's new mission project, Veteran's Community Project, based out of Kansas City. Last spring, the youth group, grades 6 through freshmen in college, spent three days in Kansas City working at the site of the Veteran's Community Project. This organization builds "tiny houses" which are transitional housing for veterans of the area. All supplies and labor for building these homes and are all donated. They also provide free bus passes to all veterans so they are able to get around, including to and from work. There are more services provided, but those two are invaluable.

Since the youth of St. John's had been blessed to work in the heart of this organization, they were thrilled when their church chose VCP as their mission project for the year. The kids decided to kick off the fundraising year with a luncheon. Their sponsor, Robin Billings, used her Thrivent Action Dollars to purchase all the food for the meal so all the proceeds would be profit. With the support of the whole community and surrounding area, the group raised nearly $2,000 for the Veteran's Community Project. Thank you to everyone who helped support this meal!
