January 2018 School Board Recognition Month

The job of a school board member is tough, the hours are long and the thanks are few and far between. It is all too easy to put off saying “thank you” to this group of individuals who work tirelessly on behalf of our children and grandchildren. They spend countless hours preparing to make decisions, participating in meetings and attending school activities and events. The locally elected school board is deeply rooted in U.S. tradition, as is public education. Our state has a proud tradition of support for public education, and in fact in 1966 the people of Kansas amended our state’s constitution to specifically call for local public schools that are ‘maintained, developed and operated by locally elected boards.’

The Kansas Association of School Boards has designated January 2018 as “School Board Recognition Month.” Thunder Ridge USD 110 faculty and staff would like to encourage that you take the time to express appreciation to these seven remarkable individuals: President Rex Lowe, Vice President Darin McDowell; Members: Amber Beach Hardacre, Todd Slavik, Kirby Shaw; New members: Tracy Atchison, and Mitch Miller.

At the December 11 BOE meeting, Board of Education President Rex Lowe presented out-going Board Member Tiffany Rietzke with a plaque in appreciation for her four years of service to USD #110. The district also expressed their appreciation to outgoing Board Member Kelly Bretton for her four years of service. Kelly’s plaque will be presented to her at a later date.

Weekly Inspiration

What’s done is done and what’s gone is gone. One of life’s most valuable lessons is learning how to let go and move on. Looking back at your good memories is fine but never let the past stop you from moving forward.

This year has almost gone. Not all our friends and family made it. Never take for granted the people you love. Be thankful for today, because in one moment, your entire life could change.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something. -Neil Gaiman
