A Little Southern Taste for a BIG Cause

September 10 was the official kick-off of St. John Lutheran Church's Mission Project for the next year. Each year the church votes on an organization or project to support. After choosing an organization, the church begins raising money to donate and also volunteers their time and effort throughout the year by completing hands-on projects for the chosen organization.

This year's organization is Crossroads Rescue Mission based out of Kearney and Hastings, Nebraska. This organization provides shelter, meals, and God's word to homeless families in the area. It is a faith based group so it doesn't receive any government funding. It relies solely on gifts and donations to keep their doors open.

Their director, Jerry Bumgardner, spoke to St. John's congregation after worship last Sunday. Following his presentation, a wonderful Mardi Gras meal was served. Authentic New Orleans food was prepared by Genny Rahjes, Liz Hainke, Mary Struckhoff, and Bill Winters. The youth of the church did the serving and bussing of tables.

Several community members joined the church members and were all treated to a delicious meal!! Thank you to everyone who supported the mission fundraising meal!!

Kensington Library News

We are excited to announce a new program we will be offering the 3rd Monday of the month in September (18) and October (16) from 5:15 to 6:15pm. Provided by Nora Rhoades of K-State Research and Extension, Brainy Babies is an interactive, learn and play story hour for parents and young children ages birth to 3 years. Through playful learning activities, each child and adult will grow and learn together. This interactive series encourages and stimulates learning while enhancing the relationship between adult and child. Brainy Babies is a FREE program. Please RSVP with Mrs. Barnes at the library by September 14 and October 12, via Facebook or by calling 476-2219, to assist with program planning.

Lady Longhorns Take 2nd Place in Tournament

The Saturday tournament at Miltonvale was sure a long one for the Lady Longhorns who played 6 games. After knocking off two state ranked teams but falling to the #3 ranked Hanover, they walked away with a 2nd place title. These girls play with a lot of talent but even bigger heart. They give it their all out on the court and you can come see when they play at home again on Tuesday, September 26. At 4pm in Kensington they hold a triangular vs Natoma and Lincoln.

Upcoming Games

• Sept. 14th TRMS Longhorns will play in Agra vs Lincoln. The following week they travel to Beloit on the 21st for games against St. John’s. MS game times are: 4pm volleyball, 6pmfootball.

• Lady’s HS Volleyball play at Rock Hills in Mankato on Tuesday, Sept. 19, in a Quad versus Rock Hills, St. John’s/Tipton, and Lakeside. A Saturday tournament is scheduled for Sept. 23rd at Hill City for JV girls. Come see the Ladies play at Home as they host a triangular in Kensington on Tuesday the 26th at 4pm versus Natoma and Lincoln.

• Friday, Sept. 15, Longhorn Football travels to Logan to play vs Logan/Palco at 7pm. Monday, Sept. 18, JV team plays Logan/Palco at Home in Kensington at 6pm. Friday 22nd is a Home game in Kensington vs Bennington at 7pm. Monday the 25th JV plays again vs Northern Valley in Kensington at 6pm.

Important Info to Know

Grandparents Day was Sunday, September 10th this year, so Thunder Ridge Elementary plans to celebrate Grandparents this Friday Sept. 15th. Grandparents are invited to the children’s classrooms at 10:30am, then go to lunch with them around 11:15. Once the students are done with lunch they are allowed to go outside for recess. The grandparents will get to see a portion of a school day and the neat, fun things the kids do at school.

Monday, Sept. 25 is an early dismissal day for Teacher In-service. Thunder Ridge Schools will dismiss at 2:30pm.

Steering committee continues to support TR

Each year Thunder Ridge's parent organization, the Steering Committee, works to support students, teachers, and school pride. The organization wants to thank all who attended our back to school meal August 27. It was a huge success!!!

Last spring the organization held the annual school carnival. The group is happy to report all projects planned with the profits have been completed. The Jr. High received a new track record board. It proudly lists all athletes who hold a school track record. It is displayed above the double doors on the south west corner of the gym.

The other project completed is new landscaping in front of the elementary. The steering committee purchased two oak trees and a dwarf spruce. These were then planted by the TR FFA kids. The trees that had been there previously had to be cut down a few years ago. The trees will add beauty as well as shade to the elementary in a few years.

All community members are encouraged to attend a steering committee meetings when possible. They meet quarterly and they're next meeting will be November 6th at 6:00pm, at First St. John's parish hall. The next events the group supports is parent night for both vb and fb as well as helping with homecoming.
