Annual Veterans’ Day Celebration in Kensington
Saturday, November 11, 2017 is the date for Kensington’s Annual Veterans’ Day festivities. All are ivited and welcome to attend this celebration in Kensington!
The theme for this year is “Our Country, Our Flag” with Plainville native, Senator Jerry Moran, as the special guest speaker.
Starting at 9:00am, the women of the American Legion Auxiliary will host the pie stand at the Vo-Ag building on Kansas Street, across from the high school. There will be various, delicious pies for sale by the slice and paper poppies for sale too. The Auxiliary women will Raffle a quilt and other Americana items; tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.
Legion members are also be holding a Raffle for items including: Marlin XT-17 VR .17 HMR plus one box of ammo; Colt 1911 .45 ACP plus one box of ammo; Browning BPS 12 Gauge plus one box of ammo. Several consolation prizes to be awarded after the firearms. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Need NOT be present to win guns or quilt but MUST BE PRESENT to win the consolation prizes. Raffle Prizes to be announced at the Legion Hall at 9:00pm.
At 11:00am, special guest Jerry Moran will speak with prayer and parade to commence afterward. Mr. Moran and the parade will be broadcast on the KKAN KQMA 92.5 FM Phillipsburg radio station. The FREE BBQ is to follow after the parade, beginning at approximately 12:00pm/noon. {Please be sure to bring your own containers and tableware; only food will be provided.}
At 1:00pm a Flag Retirement and Disposal Ceremony will be held in the empty lot across from the legion. If you have never attended before, this is an amazing event to witness.
From 9am to 2pm is the Scholastic Book Fair at the Kensington Library. Please stop in for our special *Family Event during the Veterans’ Day festivities from 9am-2pm.
At 9:00pm, there will be a Dance at the Legion Hall and here all Raffle Prizes will be announced. Need not be present to win the guns or quilt, but MUST BE PRESENT to win the consolation prizes as they will be announced periodically during the dance. Ed Bridwell will provide music entertainment for the dance from 9pm-1pm at the Legion Hall.

United Church to Host Annual Thanksgiving Program
On Sunday, November 5, at 2:00pm, the United Church Women will hold the Annual Thanksgiving Program. Featuring Alisha DeBey, performing original compositions from her new CD “Unite Us,” this program will be held at the United Church in Kensington, 204 W Cedar Street, at 2:00pm on Sunday, Nov 5. Alisha is a local face from Smith Center. She is the USD 237 Vocal Instructor. This is a free program with refreshments to follow in the church basement. There is elevator access for those who cannot use the stairs.
Westbrook named Kansas Honor Scholar
On Monday evening, October 23, 2017, TRHS senior, Morgan Westbrook, was honored to receive a Kansas Honor Scholar award. This is an award given by the KU Alumni Association honoring all Kansas seniors that are in the top 10% of their class.
Thunder Ridge School News
The week of October 23-26, Thunder Ridge schools recognized Red Ribbon Week. The national theme for this year was “Your FUTURE is Key, So Stay DRUG FREE.” All activities and events were sponsored by the TRHS National Honor Society.
Students at the Elementary and Middle School observed the themes, Turn Your BACK on Drugs, Be ALL you can be, Don’t get TIED-DOWN with drugs, and Red’y to Live a Drug Free Life, by wearing clothing corresponding to the theme of the day.Pre-K through 3 entered a coloring contest while students in 4th - 6th grades competed in a poster contest. An essay contest was held for the first time for grades 7 through 12th. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category (not per grade). Winners of the essay contest were: 1st place Jaden Stauffer, 2nd place Sydney Rust, 3rd place Abby Hardacre for 7th and 8th grade essays; 1st place Mary Jo Shook and 2nd place Jaden Boden for 9th through 12th grade essays.
On Wednesday, October 25, High School Students took to the streets of Kensington for their City-Wide Clean-Up day. Some of the projects included landscaping around the new sign on Highway 36, painting the K-6 building, painting trim on a building at the park, painting and beautifying the Post Office, and painting a downtown mural that symbolizes the community. Several students spent time trimming, raking and cleaning up yards for residents. The High School Students were rewarded for their efforts with a taco bar meal on Thursday, and watched "The Overtaken Documentary" which focused on the dangers of drug abuse.
The Thunder Ridge High School and Student Council would like to thank the Smith County Drug and Alcohol Council for their support.

TRMS Basketball begins with the first games at 4pm on Tuesday, November 7th, @ Lincoln. Thursday, Nov. 9, they play at home vs Osborne starting at 4pm in Agra.

Kensington Library News
The Scholastic Book Fair is here! Each Fall, we hold a Scholastic Book Fair in November with a special Family Event during the Veterans’ Day Celebration in Kensington. The book fair is open for sales starting Friday, Nov. 3rd through Sat. 11th; hours include Monday 6th from 8am-8pm, weekdays 8am-4pm, Friday Nov. 3rd and 10th 8am-5pm and Saturdays from 9am-2pm. Please stop in from 9am to 2pm on Saturday, November 11th for our special *Family Event during the Veterans’ Day festivities.
St. Francis Parish Reunion
Members and guests of the St. Francis Parish gathered for their annual reunion October 21, 2017. Fr. David Michael, the priest from the Smith Center Parish presided at the 4PMMass which was offered in thanksgiving for all present and the past members of the parish. After the mass the group gathered at the Gaylord Community Center for a potluck meal and lots of visiting and reminiscing. Copies of the history of the church were available which started in 1916. The news article with pictures of the closing was also shared which was 2003. Those attending were: Francis and Colette Sweat, Dianne Durfee, Dennis and Wilma Sweat, Susan McCall, Betty Lala, Anne Marie Goracke Gower, Roy and Geraldine Orr, Bernard Vohs, Mark and Carolyn Johnson, Denise Sasse, Steve, Annette, and Sienna Wingerson, Tony, Lori, and Allie Ifland, and myself Mary Sweat.
Time Change this Saturday!
Don’t forget the time change on Saturday night, November 4th. Fall back one hour, so we get an extra hour to sleep on Saturday night. Don’t want everyone getting to church an hour early!
